Intermittent stalling and irregular idle speed 850 1996

My 850 will run and then stall. Sometimes the engine runs for an hour or more, other times for just 10-15 minutes. After a stall, it is difficult to restart. Once it does start, the idle surges to about 1600 RPMs and then drops almost to a stall at about 500 RPMs. This goes on for a few minutes after which the idle smooths out and it runs just fine.....for a while. My mechanic has checked for computer codes. None stored. His guess and mine are faulty RPM sensor. Seem reasonable? Any other suggestions. Thanks in advance for any input.
