I have a problem with my AC blowing warm and cool air intermittently during hot days. The first time when it happened was when the car had around 30,000 miles on it(still under warranteed). Took it to the dealer and they fixed it by recharging freon. Didn't mention anything about leaks. Since then, we didn't have many extremely hot days have the same thing happened until end of last summer (two years later). I finally had a chance to use the AC during a few hot days and the same problem showed up again. Now the car had around 60,000 miles on it. Brought it back to the dealer, it didn't happen because the weather cooled down again and of course they couldn't find anything. A couple of days later, another hot day arrived and they were finally able to see the condition and decided to recharge the freon and apply blue dye to check for the leak. Eventually they were able to find the leak inside the glove box. They said it was the evaporator and would cost $1,000 and a couple of days to replace it. Unfortunately, when I first encountered the problem while the car was still under warranteed, I didn't know about the blue dye inspection (of course the dealership would not suggest it). Now that the car is out of warranteed, I am stuck with a repair bill of $1,000 to fix it. Now I am trying to gather more information about this problem so I can claim the problem was there during my first complaint and they should be responsible for the repair. My question is under normal condition (no leaks), should a car's AC lose it's freon every 30,000 miles or so (which is what they claimed during the initial visit). I didn't think so since it's a poisonous gas, but I just need someone to confirm it. I don't ever remember having to recharge the freon so frequently in my other cars. I would also like to know if there is anybody out there who has encountered something similar to this with any Volvo dealership. Could somebody shed some light on this matter. Thanks.
