Service Light - Strange Question V70-XC70 1998

Ok, so I have a 98 v70t5 and the service light came on. I checked a the board and found that the 98's need the scan tool to be reset, but that the 99 and on cars can be reset using a combination of turning on the ignition and trip meter reset button. I tried the reset procedure just for fun to no avail.

So my question is, what controls the reset light? Is it some sort of control module / computer or maybe a relay of some sort? If so, would it be possible to do a software upgrade to that module or replace the relay with the same version that the 99's have or is it all too integrated? Any ideas? Just a crazy thought I figured I'd throw out there.
