pollen filter replacement 850 1994

I gather the 850 has electronic climate control - where is the ECC unit located, and does this interface with the heater to provide automatic temperature control ?

Being unfamiliar with a/c - does the evaporator get clogged with dirt / dust etc. if the car is not fitted with a "pollen filter" ???
