Transmission 95 T5R 850 1995

My Yellow T5R Estate has had the PNP switch replaced last September after being found as a code problem during the 60 k service. The neutral lock out swithch on the console has not worked for a few years but that is just a pain right? Anyway Friday the transmission failed such that reverse gear is the only gear selectable and that can be done by puting shifter in either reverse or "L". Had car towed to independent Volvo guys and code on A1 is 311 and 232. Any way they tried replacing Speed sensor, crank sensor, PNP, mode switch. The PNP switch had been replaced Sept. 2001 when a code showed up on the 60k service. The vehicle is at 68.5 k miles now. Any ideas are welcome by me and the mechanics, who say at this point $2400 for a rebuilt is the only way out.
