Remote central locking - problematic 850 1994

Recently purchased 850 estate/wagon with 2 sets of keys (both with remote locking - radio, not infrared). The receiver is on the front windscreen frame on driver's side (halfway up the door). Everything was absolutely fine for 1st few weeks, both keys working at long distance, then both keys failed to work pretty suddenly, not overnight but gradually worse over a 1-2 week period. Remote does actually still work but key has to be within 3 inches of the receiver! Tested and/or changed batteries on both, still no change. Garage has looked at it, cleaned the points on the keys, and checked receiver wiring connection, but still no change. Receiver light (when locked) continues to blink away bright and strong so there's obviously current running into it.

Garage suggests odering a new receiver .. sfr. 220 (approx. $130 - ouch ..)

Has anyone come across this before?

Thanks in advance.
