Rear Bumper Paint Stripping 850

The paint of the rear bumper of my '94 Turbo Wagon is flaking off at an alarming rate. You can pull off big chips at the top with you finger. The previous owner's bumperstickers are hanging on for dear life. It's sufficiently bad that I'm thinking of just removing the rest of the (dark blue metallic) paint.
1) Has anyone else stripped their bumper?
2) How did you do it?
3) Did it look okay afterwards?
