Wipers and RainX 850 1997

I put a new set of wiper blades in about a year ago and they are still working perfectly except the sound is like a dry squeegee on dry glass particularly during light rain(we only get 20 inches a year in Sth Australia). I thought they would eventually wear in and the sound would go, which brings me to the RainX...
Does this product do all the things it claims to do and how long does it last between applications?
Does it help prevent the wiper blades from chattering across the windscreen?
Is there another way to solve this Problem?
