ABS with '96 850s ONLY 850 1996

Before jumping to that costly conclusion, look at the 3 or more threads posted about a week ago as '96 850s have a well known wiring specific problem that can be fixed w/o replacing the control unit.
The details were listed in at least one of those threads on the exact same year, model car.

ABS control units are commonly NG in '98 X70s but not so much in previous years.
