You can get the radio codes from the dealer using the VIN provided that it is the original radio. If the code you are given does not work you will need to get the radio serial number by easing the unit out of the dash and giving your Volvo dealer that info. I know because I went through the same exercise as my radio had been replaced in 1997 and the VIN did not work.
