Hi,

I am not sure in 97 model, but in 95 model, old knob cannot be reused. I changed mine to wood trim knob and the plastic clip inside the old knob was broken when pulling it out (very hard by sitting on the armrest). You are right about the leather boot under the knob. It needs to be disconnected from the knob first before the removal of the knob. Volvo instruction did say that old knob cannot be reused.
