Read many other posts on A/C recharging questions, but started a new thread to clarify a question during/after the process. Have 96 850Turbo w/85k with the slow leak in evaporator.
I've read the past posts and did the recharging from WalMart kit with hose/guage/valve. It sorta worked, but I wanted to clarify a statement made about overcharging. Over last 2 summers, had Volvo dealer then local repair shop do the recharge. Each time they put in 1.6lbs freon.
Over fall/winter/early spring, I would bet most if not all leaked out. I bot the guage/filler hose kit at autoparts store, and bot a (1)14oz can of 134 w/oil and (2) 12 oz cans of 134 only.
First, I took the reading with my new guage and it was on "0"--green zone. With engine on and A/C on, I put in the first 14oz can of 134/w oil. Heard the compressor start working so I assumed freon was getting in. Before I started the 2nd can, I checked the pressure again, and it was right at the blue zone...starting at 45, the compressor would kick in and it would get down to 20 (bottom of the blue zone), compressor off and back to 45. Sorta cool air was coming out--but not freezing. The compressor seems to kick on for 5 seconds...off for 5 seconds....on for 5 seconds.
It never was really "cold". Now 2 weeks later, only tepid air is coming out. Checked the pressure and it fluctuates between low 40's down to under 20 (top of the green uncharged zone) when the compressor is on, back up to 40's. I know the leak is there because the numbers are lower.
My questions:
1. If system holds 1.6lbs, that would be 25.6oz. I only put in 12oz (or 14w/oil), but stopped before putting in the second can because the guage was in the "blue zone". If I would have put in the other 12oz would I have overcharged the system?
2. When should I take the reading--when it is most compressed? That would mean that I'm still low on 134. Is it normal to fluctuate between 45-20?
3. Newbie question: Is it normal for the compressor to kick on and off every 5 seconds? Is that what is called cycling? Or should it be steadily running?
Thanks in advance
