'98 V70 Tailgate Latch Problem V70-XC70 1998

My wife came home tonight and told me that she couldn't open the tailgate. After checking for a few minutes, I was able to open it from the inside with the lever in the center of the tailgate. It will not open with the outside lift handle though. When I push the unlock button either on the remote or in the car, I do hear the solenoid click and unlock. It feels as if the outside handle has become disconnected. Is this a common condition? If so what is the remedy?
