Good points 850 1996

I also have several good indy Volvo shops to choose fom. Things I learned from my SAABs were 1.) you NEVER want to bring your car to the dealer once the warranty has expired if you can possibly avoid it and 2.) if you can't handle the job you want someone who knows what he is doing to handle the job. Rarely would that be the guy at the corner gas station. Indys are likely to be more rational in terms of cost v. benefit than are the dealers.

When I had my first SAAB, it was tapped in a parking lot, damaging reverse gear (SAABs have transmission locks that require putting the car into reverse gear to remove the key). It would pop out of reverse, dealer wanted $1,800 for a rebuilt gearbox. The car was worth maybe $2000 at the time. My indy said "Sure, I can replace it. But how much time do you spend driving it in reverse? I'd just hold it in gear, myself." Point well taken and the gearbox went another 100,000 miles and two more owners before it finaly melted. Cost $0.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't do the repair, just consider the ramifications of doing it or of NOT doing it.
