98 XC First drivshaft CV is gone, 600 bucks from dealer. V70-XC70

Just told this afternoon that the first driveshaft CV is gone. No replacing
just the CV, must get complete shaft with CV on one end and yoke on the other.
Part only is $600.00. Anyone know of rebuilds? What if I just left it out and let the car run on front drive, what would it hurt?? Dealer also said the viscous coupler may be bad ($2200.00), and that may have caused the CV to have to much stress on it and fail. What a fun car to own! Suggestions!
