Calculating MPG is very easy from tank to tank. Do the following:
1. Top off the tank at each refueling. (If you don't top off, you can still get an accurate cumulative MPG, but the MPG for each tank will be off).
2. Create a two-column list on a pad of paper.
2. Record the gallons delivered in one column.
3. Record the odometer reading in the other column. (You can also make use of the tripmeter, but the odometer-reading method does not rely upon your remembering to reset anything.)
If you're handy with Excel spreadsheets, they will come in handy to automate your record keeping.
The first entry in your list will not give you MPG. You will have to top-off a second time before you can calculate MPG.
From the current odometer reading, subtract the previous reading (this obviously gives you the trip or tank miles). Divide this number by the gallons delivered when you made the current odometer reading. This gives you the MPG for the previous trip/tank. If you create a third column in your list and add up all gallons delivered (cumulative fuel used), then you can calculate your overall average MPG at any time since you began keeping records. Just don't miss recording any fuel used.
Sorry if this sounds remedial, but you do have to set up a routine and follow it.
