If it makes you happy, clean it, however I never use water. Get some water in the wrong places and you'll really see a loss of performance - also $$$

I use WD-40, silicone spray, and kerosine, being careful not to get incompatable cleaners on the soft parts. Use rubber dressing not Armour All on rubber parts. I use kerosine to remove oil and dirt off metal parts - you might need Q-Tips to clean all the nooks and crannies under the spark plug cover. I find that stronger solvents can leave a residue that is harder to remove than the original dirt.

Old socks serve as nice cleaning mitts.

While it sounds like I am a clean freak, usually I clean up a car when I get it, then let nature take its course unless I think that the dirt is harmful or I have to work on something.
