Rob,
I think what you are experiencing is called "Hyper-sensitive Hearing". After several years of being exposed to screaming kids, barking dogs, lawn mowers, 4th of July Fireworks, the neighbor kid's boom-box, and many other such stimuli, your Volvo dashboard squeaks will be no more noticable than the driving critiques from your wife.
