Struts 850 1993

There is some sort of a thud I can hear every time I go over a bump or a rough road surface on the right side of my car. My mechanic says it is because the rubber boot (cover) that goes on top of my strut has eroded off.

My car has 176k on it and I believe the struts have never been replaced. I am therefore thinking of replacing them. As the car has so many miles I am thinking of having them replaced with plain vanilla struts like a Sears or Monroe or one of those Midas etc.

Do you think this would be a stupid idea? Would it be better to keep the old ones? I know replacing struts is a major job so I don't intend to do it myself so I figured a Sears or a Midas would be a cheap way out.

Any comments.
