You might check a Volvo parts discounter like www.volvoparts.com or
the others that advertise here. Often their prices for OEM aprts
are close to what you pay at a local retailer for after-market.

Where I live, labor is expensive so cutting back on parts does not
really save much (as a percentage of the total bill). (Labor being
over $100 an hour.)

I'm not sure it is too difficult of a job. I've never done it, but
it does not look all that hard as long as you have a spring compressor
(which I think you could rent). Perhaps someone else who has done this
can add more. Also, I'm not sure if you need to have an alignment done
afterwords -- I would suspect you would.
