Winter mode & fleeting trans problem. 850 1996

So there I was on a long weekend, hoping to find some great NY state wine with wife and friends and this happens: started the car in the AM and it was in "winter mode" with the arrow and the sport setting light for the trans flashing away and the check engine light is on. After several attempts to push buttons, move levers and plead with the electronic gods proved fruitless I turned the car off and checked trans fluid. Everything was fine.

Start the car again and now the trans works as it should, the arrow is gone but the check engine light is still there. The return ride to Pa. two days later went as it should.

Of course I'll have my tech check it.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.
