Do sparkplugs make a big diff in performance?

I figure if plugs make a difference, Volvo engineers would figure it
out and use them (maybe they do). They put it a lof of effort to
squeeze out more power from the engine (example: going to variable
valve timing in newer models and independent coils for each
plug -- not cheap). It is a pretty good bet they have looked at plugs
and already optimized it (assuming there is anything to optimize).
