How much is enough?

I'm looking at my motor mounts with a careful eye as a cure for a vibration problem coming from the engine bay when I'm in drive at a light (or in park to a lesser extent). I'm looking at the front and rear lower mounts in particular. The parts guy said that the mechanics know when the motor mounts have failed due to the distance from the engine to the subframe, ie, when it sinks enough you will know. OK Bricksters, how much is enough?
