K & N air filter? 850 1995

Can anyone elaborate for me what type of K&N airbox filter they have?
I tink I have seen a filter that would fit into the standard airbox that
came with the car orignally and then I think I have seen ones that are completely out in the open. If you use the latter of the two, what happens to
all the plumbing stuff and plastic tubing for the rest of the system?
Any help would be most appreciated.
