Vacuum hoses and rubber elbows 850 1994

I had to replace these elbows on both ends of this hose on my 95 850 turbo. If yours is a turbo, it has this hose. This hose runs from the passenger side of the air intake manifold, around behind the intake manifold, over the tranny, and into the main air intake hose into the turbo. Both elbows will get soft and deteriorated over time, apparently due to oil in the air. Here is what worked for me:

It took a flashlight to see the elbow. Once I saw it I saw that it was completely blown out. This elbow is held on with a small clip that can be clamped open with pliers. I used a very long pair of 90 degree bent nose pliers to compress the clip and slide it back off the port. Next I pulled the elbow, with the pliers, off the hose, or as much of it as would pull off.

Then unhook the other end from the turbo intake hose.

When you do this, forget about the vacuum hose! To remove/replace it would mean you would have to remove the intake manifold itself to get to it, as it is clamped down to the block of the engine behind the manifold.

Go to your local Volvo dealer and order the two elbows (they are not identical), then go buy a vacuum hose at a parts house (or several hoses and connectors if you cannot find one hose long enough as it will need to be long) and reroute the vacuum hose from the side of the intake manifold, around the front of the intake manifold, under the idle air control valve, over the tranny, and into the spot where the old elbow plugged into, attaching the elbows to each end of the new hose with connectors.

Voila, your air leak is magically fixed. Now reflect on a job well done and realize that life is good. :)
