According to the Consumer Reports Frequency of Repair charts this past April, problem rates by model year, for A/C system (including evaporator) for the Volvo 850 SVC70:

2001 2% or less
2000 2% or less
1999 2% or less
1998 5.0% to 9.3%
1997 5.0% to 9.3%
1996 9.3% to 14.8%
1995 More than 14.8%
1994 More than 14.8%

This is a similar pattern to most Chrysler products. It is not a good pattern when compared with most Japanese cars.
