sedan trunk strut question 850 1996

I asked this question before, but I think I phrased it badly so I'll try again. Trying to track down a noise in the rear of my car. When the trunk is open and the struts fully extended, I can grab the right strut and there is about 1/2" of left/right play in it. Whereas there is almost no play in the left strut. Does anyone know if this is normal? If anyone would like to go out and play with their trunk struts that would be great :-)
