CRUISE CONTROL 2002 V70

I recently returned from a wonderful 1300 mile trip driving my 2002 v70. I used the cruise control the entire time I was on the highway and had it set at 72 mph . the vehicle speed never went above 72 mph even though I was coasting down mountains ! I have owned 15 cars, and all except 1 had cruise control and they all would pick up speed as you coasted down mountains and hills. So, I am really curious to as how this car/cruise control is maintaining a constant speed? I find it fasicinating ! anybody know how the cruise control is able to do this ?
p.s. I got an avg f.e. of 32.869 mpg with an avg speed of 68 mph
