1993 850 Condensor replacement, need advice please. 850 1993

Hi,

I brought my '93 850 into the dealership since my AC wasn't working, and they told me that I need a new condensor as my old one was leaking. They also told me it would cost $850(can) to do the job. That's a little costly for me.

I have since called up multiple independant garages and had been told of different alternatives. One such place informed me that "if I were to replace the condensor, I will also HAVE TO replace the dryer." The dryer costs roughly $170(can) in addition to the condensor cost.

I'm wondering what exactly is this "dryer", and whether or not replacing the condensor has to be coupled with the replacement of the "dryer". I'm also wondering about the possibility of an aftermarket unit. Does anyone have any experience with such units? How well do they perform compared to the factory Volvo parts?

Thanks for your help
