'94 850 - Ashtray removal 850 1994

Anyone had any experience with ash-trays on the 850's?

I had the car in for the state required emissions testing this morning, and the fellows "pulled out" the ash tray to get better access to the OBDII port.

Now it won't go back in place at all. In looking at it, it looks like there should be two gears somewhere inside the mounting tracks in the console which engage a curved set of teeth on the side of the ashtray, but I can't find the gears anywhere.

Did the emissions testing folks break something by pulling the ash-tray out? Is there some trick to getting it back in place?

Thanks!
