'96 850T A/C problem-- HELP! 850

My air conditioner has been acting up in the last couple of weeks.

On three instances in the last two weeks, the following has happened--

When I start my car, there has been a fairly loud hum from the front of the engine compartment. This hum will last between 5 and 15 seconds. The air conditioner will not click on and the lines will not get cold of frost. Obviously the air will blow warm during these instances.

On other occasions, the system will blow ice cold.

Please give me an idea of the possible problems.
