855 T...typically hard riding? 850

I'm a relatively new Volvo owner (6 months, 10,000 kms) of a 1996 855 T, 74,000 kms. I find that the car is pretty unforgiving on rough roads and over bumps or frost heaves, of which there are many where I live. It really “bangs” over this type of bump. The shocks don't seem to be weak.
Is this typical of this car? Or should I look for a problem area? I noticed someone had posted recently that the right engine mount may be a cause of this sort of behaviour. How do I know if this is the case? Thanks, I appreciate everyones help.
