manual transmission problem 850 1994

Both my SAABs did this, #1 would pop out of reverse ("How much time do you spend driving in reverse?" said the astute (non-dealer) SAAB mechanic). #2 would pop out of 3rd. I fiddled with the linkages a bit, but he only "cure" I would think is a rebuilt transmission. How much time do you spend decelerating downhill in 2nd? And do you do this to slow the car? Brake pads and rotors are cheaper than transmissions and clutches, a thought for your next car.
