Please help a newbie! 850 or S-70?? 850

- If you're buying one from a dealer, 'pre-certified' starts from '98 models and on, so you probably won't be able to get a pre-certified 850. It jacks up the price, though, so it can be good or bad, depending on your situation.

- As a rule of thumb, I avoid the 1st model year (and 2nd as well, actually). s/v70s were shipped starting '98, so I avoided 98 & 99. When I did that, the price jump was more than a couple of K. Many will tell you that 70 is essentially same as 850, but I heard there were more than 700 (?) changes. Not sure what that number includes, tho.

- I wanted to be able to work on my car, and s/v70s are much harder. Note : 96/97 models require special tool to reset service reminder light (and to get the error codes).

- Like the previous poster, I actually liked the boxier look, and with the above items, it was an easy decision. Hard part was finding one with good body & engine. I took candidates to my mechanic and had him check it over. Some dealers and mechanics will charge you for the service, but it's well worth it.

I was tempted to buy a very nice '00 model, but it was too much $$, and I ended up getting a '96 turbo model (started out looking for a '97), and have no regrets so far. If you read other previous posts on this board, you'll get a good idea on what to look for in a used 850.

Good luck.
