Air Conditioning Problem 850 1995

We bought a used 850 Turbo wagon last August and it immediately died after our first 4 hour trip in the summer: the air conditioner was shot and because of the way it's hooked up the car couldn't run without it (as well as the electrical problems that occurred). We had it fixe then - new compressor, new electrical wiring, etc., BUT today as I slowed to turn into our driveway (after a year of running fine, with A/C in the hot weather and without it in the cool months of New England) the car stopped running and all lights on the dash came on. I immediately turned off the A/C after last year's event, and it did start up again briefly until I turned the AC on again. Can anyone help me out??? Is this common, and do you know if the real problem is just not getting dealt with yet?
THANK YOU!!!
