AC & evaporator core 850 1997

Hello;
I drive an 850 with 82,000 miles on it. this summer the AC is dead. I took it to a dealer where it was recharged and diagnosed as leaking evaporator core. Price to replace - almost $1000.
Took the car home and called a local Volvo repair shop. The serviceman there said that there is a kit made by Volvo that costs about $120 and that they can put on my car and it will stop the leak.
When I called the dealer back to ask about this I'm told that there is no such thing as a kit. Has anyone ever heard of this? I don't know what to believe.
thanks.
Brian
