Radiator Cooling Fan 850 1997

My Cooling fan on my radiator was not working and after a few voltage checks I disconected the plug to the fan and put the positive voltage to the red and the green leads..one at a time. Both speeds worked ok. I took the car for a ride and after I came back the fan was on when I stopped the car. When I turned off the car the fan stopped. I guess my big question is what controls the fan going on and off. I see it has two leads going to the control module EZK (DI) Ignition System which should conrtol the relays(?)in the in the fan control unit..but how does it work and should the fan keep going after you turn the car off if the engine is still hot? The way I think it would work would be for the control module is to provide a ground....am I right?? Thanks for any input. The books I have looked in don't give too many details...VolvoLarry
