850 / 960 engine similarities 850

When people pan their 960s are they comparing them to 850s or their beloved 240s and 740s?

One obvious difference would be their crankshafts. When 5 cylinder engines first came out, (I do not remember if it was Audi or MB) I was surprised to read that 5 cylinder engines are smoother than 4 or 8 cylinder engines, and much smoother than 6s.

Other than that I do not have much first hand knowledge about the two engines.

I now own two 850s and love them, but few posters appear to express that sentiment, I trust that the same is true for 960s.
