The thoughts of others in this thread are not wrong. Obviously, the best solution is to completely repair your A/C system (it's very likely that your evaporator is leaking). This will cost you > $1000. And if you're like me, this is not trivial.

The next best thing to do is a proper evacuation and charging of the A/C system with known amounts of coolant. In my area, this runs $120-170. And if you don't fix the root cause (probably the evaporator), you will end up repeating this procedure sometime in the future. Maybe a month, maybe years, depending on how bad your leak is.

The "cheap" solution that *may* get your A/C performance back is to charge it up ("top off"!) yourself. This will cost you about $25, and same as above, you may have to repeat it. You also will not earn your Greenpeace merit badge doing this, but it's legal in the US (except for Wisconsin).

So you have to decide what your cost/nuisance/environmental-concern threshold is!
