AC possessed? 850

my 95 850 is having some AC issues. first of all, it's not as cold as i would like it to be, but i expect that since this is my second 850 and i know it's about time for a recharge. i am, however, procrastinating since it should be time to replace some of the components and it may add up to $300 or so.

anyway, my question is this... my AC is making a quiet, piercing ring. i can notice it especially at lower fan settings, it seems to repeat at 4.5 second intervals and the tone itself lasts about a second. has anyone else experienced this?

also, just the other day, while the AC was on, i had what looked like steam (not heat steam, but more like dry ice steam) begin to flow out of the vents. so i shut it off for a moment and turned it back on. the air was colder than ever for the remainder of my ride home. however, since that day, my air has gone back to it's normal behavior of taking a while to really get cold.

i know you're all probably tired of AC questions and issues, but i guess it's that season. thanks in advance for any help...
