Timing belt/replacement engine update 850 1996

Hi,

I posted last week about the snapping of my NEW timing belt. For those who may be curious, this is the official explanation from the dealer:

"The cause of the failure was due to the Aux Belt breaking and pieces went into the timing belt covers. The pulley on the alternator belt was bent causing the aux belt to break."

Some of you expresse skepticism about this cause, so I thought I'd solicit additional feedback.

They had a very difficult time lining up the new alternator and the belt. They replaced the belt tensioner.

I rode the 300 miles back home right after they completed the engine replacement (got a used engine because it was $2200 cheaper than a factory rebuilt one) and the the car seems to run a little better than before (as expected). Also, the tempurature gauge was back in the middle (it was very low before the destruction of the engine.

One last question: why aren't all engine "noninterference?" It seems to me that there whould be a really good reason for a car to be designed in a way that will lead to self-destruction if a belt breaks...
