Why does everyone say they buy a Volvo for safety? 850 1997

I am sure that this has been covered before, but I haven't seen much discussion on this topic since I've been on this board.

Why does everyone say they buy a Volvo for safety?

There have been a number of posts in the past several weeks, from buyers who are looking at used Volvo's, and one of the prime reasons they give for looking for an 850, is for it's "safety."

I realize that Volvo is, many times, in the forefront of safety development. But that is distictly different than demonstrating that their cars are "safe."

Beside marketing, can someone point me to some real, scientific data that corroborates the Volvo safety dogma.
