whats the most powerful 850 turbo?? - ford escort 2.0L 450bhp 850

This baffles me. from reading around I have seen the T5 engine tuned up to produce about 300bhp.How is it that a 2.0L escort cosworth can be tuned to produce 450bhp. considering that the volvo engine is 2.3L and has 5 cylinders.

Anyone know why this is?????
