Upon further discussion with the dealer where the care was fixed, they believe that the belt tensioner failed, causing the belt to fail, leading to the timing belt to jump a tooth. I have the broken serp belt, and the failure occurred at precisely the same location (around the entire belt) where a prior belt had worn prematurely - about two grooves in from the outer edge of the belt.

The dealer believes any bending probably occurred after, not before the belt failure.
