Shift Knob Removal Pains S70

Hey- Does anyone have directions for how to remove the manual shift knob in a 1998 S70? I found an older post that spoke about cutting through it just above the plastic ring, but when I did that it was just a plastic shaft underneath. At this point I've just made a mess of the old knob and it's no closer to coming off.... Thanks in advance!
