V70 GLT Transmission Problems V70-XC70 1998

I recently bought a 1998 V70 GLT with 72.5K miles. Since purchasing it, I've noticed a couple of problems with the transmission.

The first is that sometimes at idle in drive or reverse, or driving, say, under 5 MPH, I'll feel a pulse from the transmission like the car wants to jerkforward and the idle will drop about 100-200 RPM. It feels kinda like the torque converter is momentarily grabbing or locking up. The problem seems most noticeable after the car has warmed up, you park it a while and do some shopping, then get in and put it into gear.

The second problem is that the shift is too hard. I mean, I kinda like the "shift kit" feel, but I think it's so hard that it might eventually damage the drive train.

Could this be the trans fluid? I found a yellow dipstick, I guess this is it, but it's right under a big hose, which I guess is coming out of the intercooler. What's the best way to get at the dipstick?

Thanks.
