frozen inner 'door handle' 98 S70GLT S70

Dear Brickboarders,
I would appreciate any insight you might have into the following problem.
My '98 S70 GLT has an inside passenger door handle which is not actuating the latch. When you try to open the door from the inside on the passenger side,
the handle moves a just few millimeters but then binds. I can see that the latch mechanism begins to move, but something seems to be jammed preventing it from lifting the latch. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
