XC v. V70 AWD

I am thinking about buying a Volvo wagon, probably from the late 1990s. I like the idea of AWD which leaves me with the XC and the V70 AWD. How do the two compare. My impression is that the additional cost of the XC buys you cool looks and better ground clearance. Am I wrong? Any thoughts are appreciated, both on the comparison and the advantages/pitfalls of Volvo wagons and Volvo AWD. Thanks.
