plastic modling V70-XC70 2001

I have a 2001 XC. There is a thin piece of plastic running along the a-pillar between the front windshield and the door. This piece also runs the length of the car just below the roof rack. The plastic looks like it has rust on it. Like there is some sort of corrosion. Anyone else have this problem? I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Can't think of anything weird that I did to this plastic -- it's so isolated that it has to be a defect of some sort.
