How hard is it to replace a sway bar link? 850

What are the symptoms of the sway bar links in need of replacement? Mine are 102K mi veterans. I have popping sounds on take off in my front end on bothsides near the wheels. Just so happens I have a fresh pair of these to install, but have never heard of the reason for doing so.
